A Good Day
Two really good things:
1. My mom was informed this afternoon that starting Friday she'll be the new interim Executive Director of the Women's Crisis Center (and will be considered for the permanent position if she's interested in it)! While this is bad news for the current ED who does not yet know she is going to be fired tomorrow evening, it is great news for my mom. And don't feel bad, the woman had plenty of time to realize that it might not be a good idea to take off for the day at noon every single Thursday to get your hair done. I mean come on, either find a hairstylist that isn't 2.5 hours away each direction, or join the rest of us who don't need to get our hair fixed every single week. Geez!
Congrats Mom (!!!), I'm so glad the board recognizes all the hard work you do and all the shit you've had to put up with. It's about time something good happened!
2. The Red Sox breaking the curse!
In other news, Greg's appointment to have the doctor look at his MRI scans isn't until next week. Also tomorrow we're (well really I'm) having friends over for the Day of the Dead crafting party I mentioned before. Though now the agenda has been expanded to include pumpkin carving and hot tubbing by request, and also homemade pumpkin pie which was demanded (which is still in my oven, which is why I'm not in bed yet). Should be fun.
Karina meeting Bella! We didn't get any decent photos, but I wanted to share these anyway since it was so neat to see Bella around a kid for the first time. She was really excited but did great and Karina kept coming back for more and more doggie kisses. Basically she would walk up to Bella and close her eyes and scrunch up her face and Bella's nose would swoop down to her face and sniff her which would send Karina into fits of giggles. So cute. They also exchanged a few hugs. We're so proud of Bella.
Helpers
We spent most of the weekend with our friends Josh (Greg's coworker who is moving) and Stacy and little Karina. They aren't moving until Christmas but their house was listed for sale this weekend and so they needed to get it ready for showing. Lots of packing and cleaning and carting boxes to storage. We managed to have a great time helping them out though and stayed over late both Friday and Saturday nights playing games and hanging out with sweet Karina. She's gotten to know us well now and is all hugs and kisses and cuddles. Greg just loves her and is so good with her it's amazing.
Greg update
He got in for an MRI on Friday and now has to bring the films back to the doc to see what he says. He seems to be feeling better so we're hoping it's something that will heal on it's on over the next 4 or so weeks.
So Greg has gone and injured himself AGAIN playing soccer. This time it's his knee, and it happened last week. He didn't see a doctor right away because he was hoping it would just magically go away, but it hasn't and while he can walk on it, he limps like a crippled old man. He saw an orthopedic specialist today who took xrays and said there wasn't major damage, but that there's a small chance it could need surgery - only an MRI can tell. So we're waiting to find out when he can get in for that, even though the doctor was fairly sure it will be nothing serious and will heal within a month.
Sue, I'll be sure to update here when we have news as I know Greg would probably have an entire conversation with you and forget to mention it.
Zoo
Greg and I went to the San Francisco Zoo today with Josh (Greg's team leader at work who just gave his notice and is moving back east in January which is really sad), his wife Stacy, their daughter Karina (who we adore), Mike (another coworker of Greg's), and Mike's children Sagea and Levi (we adore both of them too!). If you can manage to not dwell on the really depressing habitats most of the animals are living in, then the zoo was a really good time. Greg saw his favorites - the elephants (though not his second favs the gorillas), and I saw my polar bears and penguins. The best part was just being there with the kids and watching them run around and have so much fun.
I made this cute kitty tonight. She's my first ever cloth creature. I'm on a mission to master my sewing machine so I've been coming up with projects in order to practice. I think kitty turned out so adorable (Greg thinks she's wierd and scary), and she was fun to sew, so I'm planning to make other animal buddies to be her friends. I'm thinking maybe a rabbit and of course a puppy. She's far from perfect and I'll admit she has an strange look about her due to the mismatched sizing in her ears, arms, and legs - but that just made me think of that television holiday special, Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer, and the Land of Misfit Toys that's in it. Isn't that perfect for this little kitty? So I may make a whole host of misfit toys to keep me company.
Boycott
OUR TV IS FIXED! We were able to rent a movie, play video games, and watch late-night tv last night! Now the only follow-up is to ask you never to shop at Best Buy again. I thought Greg was kidding when he started saying this a week ago after dealing with a hundred stupid customer service people all in one phone call, but apparently he's serious, and he wants others to know how poor their service really is.
This and That
*Had people over to watch the first presidential debate and for dinner which was really fun. We're hoping to have more people over next week for the final debate. We pretty much watched for a few minutes, then made fun of Bush for a few minutes, then watched for a few minutes, and so on. . .
*The tv broke later that same night though, and is still not fixed! We don't watch a lot of tv, but we rent movies all the time, and play a lot of video games (in Greg's case, A WHOLE LOT), so the past week was a little crappy in that regards. Hopefully it'll be fixed today or Monday at the latest.
*I've been in a crafts frenzy which keeps me really happy. I'm working on adding gift items to Red Rover, decorating the house for Halloween/fall, sewing costumes, messing around with paper mache, and starting to plan ideas for Day of the Dead crafts I can make (see next item).
*I'm planning to celebrate the Mexican holiday Los Dias de los Muertos (Days of the Dead). I've been doing some reading about the tradition over the past few months and hoping to celebrate it this year (the dates are Oct. 31-Nov. 2). I think it's a really unique and fun way to honor and remember the dead. I mainly am interested in it because of the wonderful crafts and colors and food and decorations that are part of the tradition. I've convinced Greg that we should set up a mini alter in our house (basically just a shelf on the wall), and have friends over one night to decorate skulls (skulls are the symbol used to represent a departed friend or family member, and they are decorated with bright colors, and placed on the alter with candles and incense). Ok, Mom and Sue (and Greg too), I know you think I'm crazy now, but really I just think it's a neat holiday.
*I finally got to see Greg's new office, and all I have to say is WOW! It is the coolest office I have ever been in. It is just an office, with cubes and conference rooms, etc. but it's so damn hip and modern you wouldn't believe it. It's exactly what I always pictured those high-tech computer companies back in the Silicon Valley glory days would be like. There was a huge space though on Greg's desk where a photo of me should have been. Or at least Bella. Sheesh!
We're back
Got loads of pumpkins and had a great time. Took a few photos with my camera phone. I love the one of Greg but I wish I'd taken it with a real camera so it'd be clearer. Down in Half Moon Bay it actually almost feels like a real fall season which was great.
Pumpkin Patch
It's Halloween-time! Today Greg and I are going pumpkin hunting at the farms down in Half Moon Bay. Can't wait to see what we bring home. I think I'm going to do what I did last year (thanks for the idea Mom) and paint one side of them now to display for a few weeks, and then carve the other side right before Halloween. Those painted ones in the grocery stores are so crappy and expensive, and I discovered last year how fun and easy it is to paint faces and I even sold a few. I wish I had time to paint a bunch and try to sell them somewhere locally. Here are a few photos from last year.
