Ta-da

Well, here he is! My entry for Month of Softies. My inspiration was The Pink Panther. . . go ahead and laugh - hah hah! This is what happens when you are new to sewing and think that you'll whip up a practice panther first out of green felt that you have on hand, but then realize you are in way over your head with these monstrous proportions and pattern-less very difficult head shape. You end up with a green pink panther. Oh well, my dog Bella liked him!

Ehh. . .

zoo
Trying to figure out what to do with these animal blocks. They already have a home and I'm anxious to get them there. I am thinking wall hanging, except I don't know how. I need to search online for inspiration for pieced together, non-quilt, wall pictures/hangings.

Square

hearts
My quilt square for the tsunami project. I wanted to create something with a handful of hearts to represent me and my family and friends who have been so touched by this tragedy and have opened our hearts to the victims. A little hope of love and peace for them from California.

Odds

It's 6pm and I'm sitting at work still trying to get enough done to keep my head out of the water! It's been nuts here since I went full-time, go figure. I am taking a moment to de-stress by thinking about crafting.

I finished a quilt square for the tsnuami project last night, but as Greg is in the process of building a new computer (yes, to go with the monster screen) I don't have my photo uploading software capabilities - the horror! So I'll post it when I can. I mailed off my first Snail Mail program letter to Hope this morning. This weekend I'd like to attempt my Pink Panther-inspired idea for the Month of Softies if I'm not too scared. Also more pillowcases, and I need to finish two new felt critters.

Heaven

Heaven
We had a little afternoon celebration at work today with carrot cake (one of my favorites!) and this ice cream which I'd never had before but now will be my choice dessert when I am feeling indulgent. You have to try it, I swear it is delicious!

Also at some point my boss walked in and saw what ice cream we were having and said she'd just happened to have dinner last night with the very Ben of Ben & Jerry's. Wierd huh? Apparently he has a place here in San Francisco and was networking with my boss for some new group he founded when they sold the company. Someone asked if he looks like a man who had owned an ice cream company for many years and she said something like "well he rides his bike everywhere and doesn't own a car, but I wouldn't say he looks like he hits the gym very often. . .".

Huge

Huge
Greg's new 20 inch monitor. I didn't know they made monster screens like this - I feel like I need to sit across the room from the desk in order for it to be in perspective! But man are these crafty/illo blogs lookin' good on this thing!

Frustrated

Boring tech rant. . .

I am sick of these Blogger templates! I wish I had listened to the dozens of people in the past few years who told me I should learn to make webpages. I just couldn't see that I would ever really have a need for those skills, but now here I am with a small business website that took a good friend hundreds of hours to do in order to meet my demands, and now this - a personal website that I would kill to have it's own unique design. The service Blogger offers is good (the free part has to be fairly recognized), but the cookie cutter aspect of every Blogger blog is getting really old for me. I want rabbits and dogs and trees and penguins in my design! And I don't want anyone else to have it too! It isn't a surprise that with the limited offerings there would already be two of us crafty chicks who ended up on the same page. The dots I had previously were killing me, and apparently Brit was equally tired of her old look. But where to go from here?

Pink

pink
I am jealous of all the knitters who are into the sock frenzy this winter and wish I knew how to make my own toes cozy too! So I can't say that I knit these cute hot pink fuzzy ones, but I did get them for $3 from an Ann Taylor clearance rack yesterday.

I think I may try to do something for the Month of Softies afterall. I decided early in the month to skip it because I feel to overwhelmed with trying to sew a good stuff-ed, but then last night I thought of using The Pink Panther from the 60s (sort of a vintage cat, right?) as inspiration and now I want to try. So we'll see if I have time to look for fabric and sew before the deadline.

Pillowcases

pillowcases
Mariko's excellent tutorial - simple and satisfying!

Greg and I spent most of our day with Mike (works with Greg), his wife Stephanie, and their kids Levi and Sagia. We were hanging out at their house "to watch the game" (the football playoffs) but only Mike really cared so mostly we just ate, and ate again, and then again. That's what football is all about, right? Can't wait to do it again for the superbowl. It was such a treat to be around the kids who are so adorable and entertaining. Highlights from playtime were playing farm (meaning mommy and daddy and even the guests have to crawl around on all 4s acting like horses and moo cows), and setting up the kids tent which became a jail and then all of the adults were arrested. Are all kids games really about dominance issues? We'll hopefully be spending more time with them from now on.

Inside my purse

inside my purse
Scary! I've always been one of those girls who has to carry a larger bag since I like to cart around tons of crap, but now that I've laid it all out I really feel like an idiot. And this is one of my smaller ones! Someone commented on flickr "where's your ipod" and I had to ask Greg that very same question. Where is my ipod (a mini blue one if we want to get into details)? To give him credit it's only been in the past week that I made the decision that I even want one, but now that I do, I really, really want one! Too bad they aren't cheaper.

Anyway, see other purse guts here.

Sweet mail

I just signed up for the Valentine exchange with Lori-Lyn! I am a huge fan of snail mail and have been peeking around the internet wishing I could join one of these gifty/craft swap things, but they always seem to be full. I was happy to find the cute and simple idea of offering to send via mail a little homemade card or trinket and possibly get one in return. I always am stuck with the problem of what to do with the silly things I make (since for me, and most of us I assume, it's definitely all in the making, and not in the results) and so having an address or two on hand for someone who appreciates these types of things would be really fabulous. And handwritten notes via the mail will forever go straight to my heart! So, if anyone wants to swap mailbox details just to have on hand for whatever or whenever send me a line.

Also a link for anyone who wants to do a little good in this sometimes really depressing world (sometimes being today, the day of Bush's 2nd presidential inauguration) - Hugs and Hope. I discovered their website last year and have been mailing birthday cards and holiday cards to lovely little children ever since.

More totes for coworkers.

Other: Working more hours is already kicking my butt since I keep staying late. Greg won $33 at his company's weekly poker night. And Bella threw up in the middle of the living room carpet last night.

Start of a zoo

Start of a zoo
I have tote bags to work on, and pillowcases that never even got started, but of course I had to play with felt this weekend or things would just not have been right. So now I've started a whole cast of animals and have no clue what to do with them as they're all on random pieces of this green wool felt. I'll post the others when I can take a better photo. My camera sucks and I'm always posting at night when I have poor lighting.

Today Greg and I drove down Hwy. 1 to Half Moon Bay to the little pet shop where we buy Bella and Pepper's food, and on the way the gorgeous views gave us our inspiring idea of the weekend. It started with Greg saying we should each get a pilot's license, but then after discussing the money and time needed for that we made some changes to the idea. Now we would like to celebrate some special occassion this year by having someone take us up in one of the small planes, possibly with friends, and go down to Monterey or up to Napa for lunch or dinner and then fly back. Greg has never been up in one of those and I think it would be so fun to be up there together. I actually went up in a little plane with an instructor when I was given a lesson as my 16th birthday present from my mom and dad (who was a pilot himself) and remember how fun and scary and exciting it was!

Other inspiring ideas we've had so far in 2005 (we've decided we'd like to start having lots more fun) are to go horseback riding on the beach, get massages together, and visit this huge African wildlife reserve up in Sonoma County.

(Btw, if anyone ever figures out how to post multiple photos in one go on either flickr or hello I would love to know.)

Fabric

glamour puss
I went to Jo-Ann's Fabric today looking for scraps to start my own "stash" and they had tons of clearance fabric that was an additional 50% off the clearance price this weekend only! There wasn't much that I actually liked too well, but for that price it was perfect for me since I'm just practicing and giving away whatever I make anyway.

Here's a tiny little cat bag I made with the glamour puss fabric. Tonight I'm using Mariko's pillowcase tutorial for the first time with some of the other cheapo fabric I got today so I'll post when I'm finished.

Oh, and Greg was actually home today! He worked till 10pm yesterday but has today and tomorrow guaranteed off from work. We went out to the gym and also got the next tape of Six Feet Under so tonight we'll be at home watching "the Sunday shows" (Simpsons and Arrested Development) and then SFU.

Valentines

Valentines
Got some paper this afternoon to start making hearts and envelopes for Valentines.

Hearts

My Valentine's Day house decoration. Crayon and wax paper hearts from Martha online. If you want to feel like a kid again I strongly suggest this project. (Mine didn't even turn out well since I used way too many crayon shavings, but it was fun and still looks pretty when the sun is out.)

Patches

patches
It's 1:30 in the morning and I'm going to bed after spending my evening on the couch sewing little patches (to decorate future tote bags maybe?) while episode after episode of Fear Factor played in the background. Greg is still at work and I am running out of soothing throat drops.

Fuzzy pink bag

Fuzzy pink bag
My second tote bag from Mariko's lovely tutorial with a fuzzy pink fleece lining because I really have no fabric stash since I'm just getting started. (run on?) Luckily I work with lots of girls who I can dump all my crafts onto during this learning-to-sew stage and they actually like the stuff!

In sick news, I'm feeling pretty crappy still. My throat hurts so much at times that I just want to cry. I am hoping to breeze through the day at work (my first Friday working in a long time - yuck!) so I can come home to rest and make myself better this weekend. Greg has been at work till 10pm, 2:30am, and midnight the past three days respectively. He says he'll be there both days this weekend too. He's lucky he loves his job so much because if not no one would put up with these awful crunch periods. We're hoping to at least find time to have dinner out one evening to celebrate my promotion.

Time to get dressed and join the workforce. I really think they should vote to make Fridays part of the weekend, don't you?

Paperwhites

Paperwhites
Coming home to the lovely smell and sight of my paperwhites has lifted my mood considerably. They went from bulbs to this in three weeks!

Do you mind if I scream?

Message deleted.

My first real bag! I used Mariko's excellent tutorial and actually learned to sew something the right way (and you'll note there is no felt whatsoever in this project!).

More

bands
Yet more headbands I decided to make last night. They're so quick and on my level (EASY I mean) so it's quite satisfying.

Beaded

Beaded
My first attempt at making anything out of beads besides simple, single-strand bracelets. It was harder than I thought it would be, but I think with a little effort I could make something halfway decent. For now I stuck it on a felt headband since that's my current fix.

Sunday

Some headbands and other things I've been making this weekend. My new haircut basically left me with an unruly mop on top of my head and so I was desperate for help in taming my locks. I am putting off making a cat for the Month of Softies because unless I go the simple two-sided felt route I just don't think I can handle it. I may need to purchase my first ever pattern, but then there's the little problem of figuring out how to read and use it. I really need to take a sewing class or something; it's not working out so well to just pretend I can teach myself and use common sense. At least I will always have felt! I should make an 'I heart felt' patch since it seems to be the only material easy enough for me to work with.

Ok, time to think about dinner and I've got two loaves of zucchini bread in the oven. Greg had to work today but should be home soon so we can continue watching the second season of Six Feet Under. Loved the first season, but so far the second hasn't impressed us. We've decided to start a new thing of renting dvds of tv shows we missed because we don't have HBO. I think we'll do the Sopranos next, as we are probably the only two souls on earth who have never seen it. Maybe Sex in the City though I doubt Greg will agree to that one.

Bulbs

Bulbs
A gift from my mom for Christmas - paperwhite bulbs to grow in a clear pot with stones instead of soil. We set it up on Christmas Day, and look how beautifully it's growing already! We're going to have flowers by next week I'm sure. Thanks mom, I love it!

Gourds

tortilla warmer gourd
My first gourd - a tortilla warmer.

I first discovered the world of gourd art in the summer of 2001. My mom was living in Paso Robles and along one of the main roads we took to get to her house there was a gourd farm with a huge handpainted sign advertising gourds for sale. After a few passes we decided to go check it out and see why anyone would want to buy a gourd. Turns out this little farm grows gourds just to let them dry out on the vine and be sold to artists to use in various crafts. They even had a little gallery built into a shed which housed some of the family members gourd art. I was instantly interested and have since made many a gourd. Greg likes to say that he once overheard me telling someone in an overly excited tone that gourds "have been nature's own containers for thousands of years and are wonderful to work with". I like to deny ever having said something so dorky, but I will admit to dragging my mom on a two hour drive to that gourd farm in 2003 to buy around 100 gourds to experiment with! Here are just a few photos. If anyone else has ever crafted with gourds I would love to hear about it.

Slices

Slices
I took my first stab at drying citrus slices. The instructions I used called for drying them in the oven at a low temp for hours and hours. The lemons turned kind of dark, but I like the oranges. Now to figure out what to do with them. . .

If you scroll down on this page it has basic instructions similar to what I used.

Pouch

rae
Another little felt pouch I made for a friend. The colors are horrible in the photo though as the blue is actually bright turquoise.

If anyone can recommend a good book or website for beginning embroidery I'm interested!

His highness

pepper
Left a stack of old "pet" towels on the table and Pepper immediately discovered them. I love how cats can find a new soft spot in the house within minutes of it being created!

And they all go marching down, to the ground. . .

Ok so I know I said that I spent my holidays with just Greg and my mom, but I lied. I have been trying to maintain a happy/everything is wonderful picture here, but I just can't do it any longer. The number of times I resort to crying out in disgust is growing daily, and Greg has about had it with me. All this because of a few hundred thousand fucking ants. Our house is infested with ants! Creepy, miserable, multiplying, fucking (literally I presume since there's so fucking many of them) ants. I like to think I can handle a good deal of shit before breaking down, but I am apparently not equipped to deal with this situation. We've been sharing our house, our food, even our damn shower with them for weeks and yet I still let out a piercing scream and throw a tantrum each time I open a cabinet or walk into a room only to find that the little fuckers are having a party and have invited thousands of their friends. After reminding me again that if I keep screaming so much he's going to go deaf Greg cleans them up while I stand 10 feet away and shout encouraging words at him. I can't count how many nights I've slept poorly due to having real, horrible, sweat-inducing nightmares about the ants. Thank god the exterminator guy is finally back from his holiday break and can come poison bomb* our house to get them the fuck out.

*Kidding of course. With our little zoo that very appealing option is ruled out, but we're told they can still help us get rid of them so we'll see.

Holy skunk

Santa
This Santa reeks! Unfortunately when Greg let Bella outside last night he failed to see the skunk standing on our deck just 3 feet from our sliding glass door! Bella and the skunk saw each other perfectly and while our courageous (stupid) girl lunged with a growl at the skunk, she was of course instantly sprayed right in her face. Oh what fun it is to clean up a skunk-stinky great dane! Ho Ho Ho.

We have a little circus-like routine we normally do when letting Bella outside after dark due to many, many, many previous encounters with skunks and raccoons, but like anything else after so many months we've been getting lax about it. For your amusement it goes something like this: approach the sliding glass door looking out as menacingly as you can, flip the light switch 3 times (on, off, on), knock on the door with both hands hard (bang, bang, bang, bang), slide the door open just a few inches and reach your hands out and clap as loudly as possible 4 times (one, two three, four!) - by this time Bella is pressing 115 pounds of weight against you trying to fit her face next to you through those few inches of open door to sniff the air outside, and then you just fall back while opening the door wider and hope that you've done a good job of scaring away any creatures of the night.

Tsunami aid (edited*)

We decided to start off the year by donating what we could towards relief for the many tsunami victims in Asia. In researching the various international aid organizations I stumbled upon many sites with actual volunteer requests and now can't get the idea out of my head that I wish I could go in person to help. The whole disaster keeps reminding me of being in Turkey a few years ago when the big earthquake hit. The tsunami wreckage is much worse of course, but I remember driving through the streets of Istanbul and seeing thousands of now homesless people living in the streets unable to find food or clean water, with the numbers of dead climbing daily by thousands. If we had the money for airfare I believe I would seriously look into going now to help with the tsunami relief efforts. *I have been reading though that only experienced and trained professionals are needed and accepted by the various organizations at this time, which makes sense.

In the meantime here is a website with links to all of the aid organizations that are accepting donations.
