Here a grommet, there a grommet, everywhere a grommet. . .

Ta-da. Utilizing my second pattern ever I created my first sachel/drawstring bag. It was so easy I should be embarrassed to share it so proudly. But aren't the fabrics lovely (and I got the stripped one as a cheapo scrap)? And the outside pockets all around are fab too. And best of all, I learned how to use grommets! Greg had to stop me from grommeting everything in the house. How neat are those little suckers?

Update: For a laugh go check out Amy's (of Angry Chicken) post today. Do you recognize anything?

Actual crafting

Here is my latest version of that pattern I have. I say that because it's the only pattern I've ever used! This one turned out kinda slouchy, and it turns out I love it that way. It wouldn't be good for going out or anything but when I took it to work today and dropped it on my desk return it was perfectly open and accessible (and slouchy) all day for chapstick and cell phone grabs and just very nice and convenient. So it's a winner. The fabric is sorta tropicalish which could be appropriate if we get our summer here in San Francisco finally in the next two months.

Sneak peek at the project I'm hoping to finish tonight and share tomorrow.

This weekend I went with my mom to SFMOMA. Lastly for the sickos, I mean curious people, here is the latest shot of Bella's tail cyst - much, MUCH, better on day 8 than it was on day 3 or in the beginning last weekend.

The goods

Ok - here's most of my Japantown loot. On flickr I have posted pages from each of the two books. I swear I'm not baby obsessed (yet) but both books feature babies, one specifically full of baby-related crafts but all too cute to resist, the other is mostly awesome bags despite the baby on the cover. Greg was a little scared at first when he saw them.

Lotta Jansdotter sticky notes!

Stationary

And lastly, here is what my latest bandaging of Bella's tail looks like (she's doing just ok, wound looks better but she keeps tearing the bandage off when we're not looking), and a beautiful flower arrangement my mom made.

Japantown is good

Greg and I just spent a great evening in Japantown (in downtown San Francisco). Great shopping (for both of us too), delicious dinner, cheap parking, lovely and unique atmosphere, and a movie theater too - pretty much equals the perfect weekend night spot for a married couple. Lots of camera phone pics to share, and oh! the awesome goods I got at the Kinokuniya bookstore and the Kinokuniya stationary store! I can't believe I've been here five years and never visited. I will for sure be back much, much, sooner. Like next weekend maybe.

Cute overload at the Kinokuniya stationary & gifts store

Typical window display for the 50+ Japanese restaurants there are in this 3 block area! We went to Takara, voted one of SF's top 100 restaurants for the past 4 years. Seems just like all the others in looks but the food was so tasty.

More to come.

Trying to stay happy here. . .

Well our luck still hasn't turned yet. Bella's tail looks horrible even after 3 days on the antibiotics. And last night the kitchen sink blocked up, and when I tried to use a wire hanger to help unclog it, the wire went right through the damn pipe below! Plumbing pipes can't handle a little poking? What the hell are they made of? So needless to say the sink full of disgusting water came pouring out the pipe underneath.

Here's my latest attempt to keep us all sane - strawberry shortcake using a Martha recipe. The delicious almond biscuit cookies that make the base, and then the finished dish made with sweetened ricotta. Yum!

For those who took a peek at Bella's cyst yesterday and would care to see the cyst on day 3 of meds, click here if you're up for another gross photo.

So, contrary to my previous post, I have not been chilling in lovely Montreal since Friday as planned. In an unfortunate turn of events I have been sitting at home babysitting my pooch Bella in order to keep her from messing around with her tail. This is us above taken 5 minutes ago. The only good thing to note since Friday is that the sun is finally out today and Bella and I can sunbathe.

It all started on Friday evening when we showed up at the airport to discover our flight had been cancelled due to bad weather in Toronto. If you don't know, it's summer in Toronto and the weather is beauuuuutiful. But, apparently due to an accident last week with a plane slipping on the runway in some rain, they have become weather condition nazis and are canceling flights left and right. Worse news was that they couldn't get us out on another flight for 48 freaking hours. Can you believe that crap? So we had to made the sucky decision to cancel the trip altogether and go home since the tickets were too expensive to be there just 2 1/2 days. Did I mention this was to be our 1st anniversary celebration? (Not that we've taken a honeymoon yet actually, but still.) So on Saturday we're so bummed that we decide to plan something else last minute to salvage our vacation. We book a nice suite in Tahoe and rent a convertible to drive there in style, planning to leave Sunday morning. Come home from dinner Saturday night to find Bella has a huge open sore on her tail. It's a cyst actually, that she's had for a year and not bothered, that she suddenly for some reason decided to pay attention to and turn into a huge mess. We medicated and bandaged it and went to bed. Wake up Sunday am to find blood all over the house (wtw carpet and we rent nightmare!) and that she's turned the sore into a disgusting bloody puss-filled black hole on her tail. Call the vet and are told she needs surgery to have it removed. Lovely huh? So we cancel the Tahoe trip. Vet pre-op visit Monday, surgery Tuesday (today). So we now plan to spend our vacation time sitting at home, one of us having to have an eye on Bella every second as she tries to mess with her tail. Since our luck isn't changing just yet, we find out at the visit yesterday that the wound is too infected to operate on, and she needs antibiotics for 10 days before we can schedule surgery. Awesome, just what we wanted to hear. So anyway, that's my sad story, and now I have to get back to the sun.

Oh yes, photos first. Here is our depressed girl in a big Bite-Not collar which we hoped would solve the problem of her not being able to reach her tail (no such luck). Btw, if you are one of those non-squimish types and want to sort of see the open cyst, click here.

And actually there has been one highlight of my vacation - swimming with my neighbor twin babies who are getting so big! Talk about making me want a baby, these boys are the sweetest things on earth.

Adieu, or is it au revoir?

I'm headed out again for a few days. Greg and I will be hanging in Montreal until next Thursday. The trip is half 'Greg speaking at some techy (geeky) computer AI conference', and half 'happy anniversary to us'. So, cheers, I'll see you next week.

For my parting goodbye, I leave you with the fantastic creation of my friend in Portland - one drunken night she had the idea to rip apart stuffed animals and sew them back up inside-out. I spotted this duck when I was visiting her and had to take him home.

And a few peeks at my beetle collection.

Have a good weekend.

Self portrait

My cameraphone self portrait I took a few seconds ago. It's been a long, crappy day at work and I'm so glad I'll be walking out the door when I finish this post. So, no one liked my little cooking buddy? I think she's cute!

Sunday brunch

I had to make some treats to bring to a friend's brunch on Sunday this weekend and I wanted a little help so I made this little girl who's a pro in the kitchen. Mmmmm. . . banana walnut chocolate-chip mini muffins. And being inspired by the How to Garnish book I made a fruit tree centerpiece based on something I'd seen in a Taste of Home magazine.

My friend just moved into this new rental house in the city and outside of her bedroom window there is a mural painted by a little girl who used to live there. The house is gorgeous but the mural was the best surprise. Don't you love the octopus!

Little finds

Went for a stroll down Clement Street on Saturday and found these little gems. Adorabe bowls I'm going to take to work to hold my paper clips and such instead of the black office supply plastic crap I currently am using, and this great wash cloth (?) featuring Pin Bear. I've never seen him before but apparently there are other items he's on so I'll have to keep my eye out. It was 99 cents!

Monkeys, penguins (!!!!), and rabbits

Kitchen fun

A few more dolls - a snowman with a tie, a funny christmas doll, and a bright cupcake guy.

Now onto the fun stuff, my grandma gave me this when I was younger and I think it's too good to not share, How to Garnish. I've been keeping this gem to myself for far too long. It looks like it'd be from the 70s or something, but it's actually not that old. But it's fantastic nonetheless! Here are a few photos to give you a taste of the amazing vegetable and fruit magic, more on my flickr page. And yes, I have made (or tried to at least) some of these things myself.

Can you see the squash duck trio? They are my favorite!

Now after seeing these photos if you aren't itching to play with produce I don't know what's wrong with you. Although it is helpful to have some garnish tools which I'm not sure where you get, I got mine also from my grandma, some things can be done with just knives. Fun with knives too! I'll have to dig up a photo of the veggie flower bouquet I made one time. I almost lost a finger making it but it turned out awesome.

Black and white goodness

Just because, here are two photos from my days of volunteering at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in the penguin exhibit. One of the best experiences in my life! They really did just jump up into our laps like that to get pats (they like little pats more then petting).

A fellow penguin person and my favorite guy, Karoo.

Self portrait Tuesday

Posting a few hours early. This was me today enjoying being home alone on an overcast day having a soak in the hot tub with a cold beer. I put a few of the other shots I got on flickr as well. I had quite a few mishaps trying to use the timer! I had the sepia color setting on, but I'm not sure why this particular one is so washed out. I like it though.

Country bag

Really deep bag for holding magazines on my way to and from work. I'm a total magazine whore and they never fit well into my bags so I always have to carry them and then end up forgetting them on the train or in bars and restaurants. Pockets on the outside are still my favorite thing and an idea inspired by Thimble's lovely bags.

Christmas tree doll (sorry for the blurry photo).

Christmas in August?

Mr. Bear - He's a little skinny, but that's just because it's been a long time since last Christmas and he's waiting for the holidays to get here so he can pig out on sweets again. Cute smile courtesy of Hillary of course. And his backside is red and green plaid, in case you were wondering.

Felt angels (will eventually be ornaments)

Sorry I haven't posted since I got back from Portland - guess I've taken a little blog vacation without meaning to. But I'm back for real and have lots of other cute felty critters to finish and share with you. Also today is my very first wedding anniversary! So, Happy Anniversary to the best guy I've ever known; I've never had more fun sharing my life with someone before.

Self portrait Tuesday

Me and my new best friend, Elsa. She's my friend in Portland's ferret and I fell in love. She spent the last five days trying to steal everything out of my bag that she could carry and stash it in her secret hiding place under the dresser.

Back!

Just got home from Portland and I want to move there!! I said the same thing after my last visit there a few years ago but this trip was even better and the Bay Area is even more expensive so Portland looks unbelievably attractive now. If only there were game companies there so that Greg could find work. . .

Will share photos soon.
