Here to stay

closer

Here is the finished nest - they seem to have decided upon holding their ground despite the poor location choice. I'm still not over the fun of watching them all the time. They are truly busy little birds. Quite unlike this lazy girl. . .

Nesting

This morning I discovered a pretty bird couple in the process of building a nest by our garage door. We haven't yet gotten to fixing up the garage and there is some sort of bar across the door frame that the previous owners installed. The birds may have their looks, but they aren't very smart if they think this is a good place for their nest.

Already it looks as though they attempted to build first on the opposite side of the bar and when Greg or I went into the garage sometime yesterday it fell down (we didn't know it was up there, and couldn't explain the random pieces of twigs and bark on the ground until today).

But they must have worked all day and found a way to anchor it to the bar because when I got home tonight it's much larger and didn't budge when Greg went into the garage.

Now we're arguing over whether or not to leave it alone. I say leave it, and Greg says not to since it's a terrible place and if the nest doesn't end up falling down then our cat will get the poor things. I figure they already know Pepper and wouldn't build in our yard if they weren't prepared to deal with him. Greg says they will make a mess and I say it will be incredible to watch nature so closely.

Regardless of what happens, it was really great to watch them this morning - each taking turns to add a twig to the nest, making sure it was secure before flying off to get the next one. The partner would wait on the roof or the light while the other was working on the nest and then they'd switch.
